Should I Get a Bengal Cat? 7 Questions to Ask Yourself

I’m glad you’re wondering this ahead of time… it shows you really care about providing your future cat with a great home!

Here’s what I want you to do:

Now. Get really honest with yourself, and answer these questions:

Will a Bengal fit my lifestyle?

1. Are all my family members up for it?
   If this is all your idea, and no one else is on board, or maybe they are even against the idea… figure those things out before going any further.
2. Am I willing to make concessions?
   In the 5 Needs post, we talked about litter boxes locations, cat trees, scratchers. Can you deal with that? Think about your furniture. If the thought of a single nick in it raises your blood pressure, do you really think you can deal with a rambunctious kitten? Just think about these things ahead of time.
3. Am I home enough to give them attention?
   We learned that they’re very social and need companionship. Do you have the time for that? If not…
4. Am I able to bring home a second companion pet, if needed?
5. Is my schedule fairly routine and predictable?
   Bengals, like all cats, do best with a predictable routine.
6. Can I have someone house sit when I go on vacation?
   Inevitably, you’ll have to go on vacation at some point… You leaving and them being moved at the same time would be quite traumatic. Your Bengal will do much better if they can stay in their familiar, safe environment.
7. Can I afford quality diet and vet care?
   This pretty much goes without saying, as it’s a requirement to own any animal!

By no means do I mean to discourage you from getting a Bengal, they are gorgeous animals with big personalities. You’re going to adore your Bengal. But I do want to encourage responsible ownership by asking you to think about these things before jumping in!
